While many retailers rely on sales and special deals throughout the year to keep their customers coming back, most retailers expect the Thanksgiving and Christmas season to bring in a sizeable portion of their annual income. As Christmas 2011 approaches, stores are putting up their trees, wrapping banisters with holly and polishing up their holiday retail signage. What do the statistics look like for this years holiday spending?

Research from the National Retail Foundation shows consumers are expecting to spend an average of $515.94 on gifts this year (Down approximately $24 from 2010). While the thought of spending over $500 in month on gifts can seem jarring considering the economic state of the nation, it is very interesting to note that 66.1% of those consumers intent to purchase gifts from a discount store. It looks like consumers are spending, but spending wisely. Competition for those hard earned dollars will be fierce with discount stores competing directly with high-end retailers. Retail signage advertising deals and discounts will be a major part of the advertising campaign for both discount and high-end retailers; both types of retailers must be very careful with their signage to convey a professional image.

The discount store keeps costs low by minimizing expensive displays and carefully guarding its advertising dollars. Retail signage in discount stores should not be gaudy or flashy with home-made signs on poster board. Although the discount retailer may be working within a strict advertising budget, the wrong signage will make the merchandise look cheap and the store look tacky.

On the other hand, the high-end retailer that goes head to head with the discount store this season may be using hourly sales or other draws to attract customers. This requires several signage changes throughout the day and/or week, calling for an increased advertising budget for the holiday season. Again, however, whipping up cheap, one use signs will dramatically reduce the classy ambience of the high-end store.

Is there an economical solution for both retailers? Yes there is.

The answer to having affordable, easy to change, great looking signage is the handy retractable signage system. This is retail signage that hangs conveniently from almost any type of ceiling. A telescoping rod pulls the sign down for a quick signage change and the self leveling system makes for a clean and tidy look once the sign is raised to the desired height. In addition to being one of the most affordable retail signage options on the market, retractable signage is safe as it does not require ladders or heavy equipment. It is so easy to use retractable retail signage that it only takes one employee to change the sign.

This safe, effective signage solution looks great in discount and high-end retail stores. The signs are very professional and their ceiling location allows for effective use of floor space (display more merchandise) while alerting the customer to the aisles with the best deals.

This holiday season, shoppers will abound but they will be looking for the best value for their money. Do not make the mistake of turning customers away due to tacky, distracting retail signage. Look into the affordable, safe, professional retractable signage option and prepare your store for a great holiday shopping season.
